By option to use own email by having area to use reckon mail server or own send mail setup will alleviate issues with spam, missed emails and allow better tracking of emails.
Implementing an SMTP send option means Reckon can use the credentials the customer supplies to them, and then effectively the email management becomes the customer's problem, not Reckons.
Emails will be stored in the customer's email account, with date/time etc
Emails will be sent from the customer's own, legitimate email address (much more likely to get though)
Reckon's customers can choose if they want to send via Sendgrid or their own mail platform at will
Less hassle for everyone, and it's a build it once interface. The SMTP data gets encrypted and stored in the same database as the company's other data, error handling can be added to the "View History" function on the invoice or template to help the Reckon CSRs or the end user.
Hi Peter. Thanks for clarifying. I have re-categorised to 'hosted only'. We have looked at integration back to your own hosting, as well as the major providers like Google and Microsoft, but when we surveyed our customers, the breadth of providers was overwhelming. We use an email service that is whitelisted for DMARC, and its the same process used by pretty much all of the cloud accounting providers. That said, we've kept our findings from a couple of years ago and haven't ruled out an STMP integration, but we'll probably tackle this when we have consolidated our range so it's a 1-product job rather than 3. Long story short, the idea is sound, just not feasible for us at the moment.

Hi Peter, we note you categorised this as 'desktop and hosted'. As desktop does allow SMTP can we assume you are using Reckon Accounts Hosted?
